AB-100 passed - is certification still worth it in the age of AI?

Do you see any value of certification in the age of AI?

Do you see any value of certification in the age of AI? I'd say that I'm a bit late to the party, passing today AB-100 (Microsoft Certified: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect) as it was in a beta 2 months ago and in AI era probably most of people in Microsoft space already forgot about it. That makes it my 13th certification (or 14th if we count the ones Microsoft already deprecated) since I started "collecting" them in 2021. After passing it, I've started to think what is the value of certification now? With the upcoming changes Microsoft announced around certifications, most updates will focus on what’s new. And maybe that’s actually the point. Certifications are becoming less about proving long-term expertise and more about validating that you understand the latest additions to the ecosystem. There’s still one area where they make sense to me: expert-level certifications. Not because they test implementation skills. AI can already help with most of that. Instead, they focus on something more difficult - choosing the right tool for a specific scenario. This is one of the biggest pitfalls of purely AI-driven development as if you pick a wrong tool, you either need to live with it or in some cases change most of your codebase which would be absurd idea a few years ago. Today it happens surprisingly often. Some of the biggest solution I've build in the last few years get new rewritten to other technologies that were considered too expensive or time consuming... and AI changed that as well. The funny part for me? Certification renewals. Officially you’re not allowed to use any supporting tools. Microsoft monitors your activity during the exam. But realistically… I’d bet most renewal exams could be passed easily with AI assistance. So will I keep pursuing certifications? Probably yes. Especially when there’s a free voucher involved. Without that - and the pressure for some of Microsoft Partner requirements in SMB world - I'm not as much compelled.
